World Service Opportunities

The Eleventh Tool of Debtors Anonymous
We perform service at every level: personal, meeting, Intergroup, and World Service. Service is vital to our recovery. Only through service can we give to others what so generously has been given to us.

Introduction to World Service

Take your D.A. recovery to the next level while giving back to the Fellowship by volunteering for World Service. Service can be a life-changing opportunity to practice hard-won 12-step principles in a safe and supporting environment. Service can result in further inner growth that may be applied to real life situations.

“My sponsor suggested: ‘Do World Service with longstanding members who have experience, strength, and hope to share. World Service will boost your recovery.’”

The General Service Board (GSB) and GSB committees need trusted servants for volunteer positions throughout the World Service structure. These positions are explained in detail in the Debtors Anonymous Manual of Service (DAMS). Ongoing service positions include:

  • General Service Board (GSB) Trustee
    • GSB Trustees serve up to two 3-year terms. They attend monthly 2-hour meetings of the GSB and summer and winter retreats. They are assigned to several GSB committees, each with monthly meetings, and also may liaise with WSC committees/caucuses, each with monthly meetings. GSB Trustees are not allowed to perform service at the local level, as they only represent the needs of D.A. as a whole. Requirement: 3 years of solvency (debt abstinence).
  • Appointed Committee Member (ACM)
    • ACMs serve 3-year terms as voting members on any one of the GSB committees. They typically bring experience or expertise related to that committee’s scope. ACMs may continue to perform service in any position at the local level, except as a General Service Representative (GSR) or Intergroup Service Representative (ISR). Requirement: 3 years of solvency (debt abstinence).
  • Project Contributor (PC)
    • Project Contributors are approved by the General Service Board (GSB) to work on specific projects on behalf of any of the GSB committees to benefit D.A. for an agreed-upon time period. PCs may continue to perform service at the local level, including as a General Service Representative (GSR) or Intergroup Service Representative (ISR); however, PC service must be in a different area (e.g., current WSC Literature Committee members aren’t eligible for a PC position working with literature). Requirement: 1 year of solvency (debt abstinence).
  • Volunteer Group Member
    • Members of Volunteer Groups are approved by GSB Committees for GSB-approved projects, such as Writing Volunteer Groups who work from outlines to develop written literature; Tech Volunteer Groups who provide tech support for events; or Strategic Planning Volunteer Groups who conduct focus groups. No solvency requirement.

Further details about these service positions (including the links to apply online) are published below. In addition, the following audio recording will provide more information about the opportunities and benefits of doing World Service in D.A.:
